LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT IN MUSIC CLASSES

Which came first: music or language? It is almost like the ancient paradox of the chicken and the egg. Music is a universal way of communicating and it does not need language, but on the other hand, no language exists without its musical elements. The correlation between language - therefore speech and music are much deeper than we realize. We can describe both using some of the same attributes, like rhythm, intonation, dynamics as well as using elements like pause, tempo, melodie, timbre. Speech is an expression of ideas, thoughts and emotions articulated into vocal sounds and movement or gesticulation. 

Having language and music knit so close together, makes taking part in music classes enhance a child's speech development. 

 

The more songs your child can sing, the more words they add to their vocabulary and that much easier they communicate and express themselves. 

Expanding a child’s vocabulary using songs, is the most natural way of doing so. Music classes will use rhythm, rhyme and music form patterns that make it simple for a child to remember and learn. Through nurture and repetition, exposure to music through music classes will further support word acquisition that will down the road facilitate learning phonetic sounds that progresses to reading.

 

Besides music another role involved in language development is motor skills.  Why do speech pathologists always ask questions about motor development when assessing children for language disorders? At a young age taking part in music classes should be just a natural progression of a child’s development that starts in the womb. Listening to songs and speech, playing with their fingers, taking their first steps, saying their first words, are all subconscious ways of absorbing natural and simple rhythmic and music concepts. Music classes should build on these assumptions, waking up the subconscious and creating new grounds to build on.
